Womens health expo

The Umatilla Chamber of Commerce will have its inaugural The September to Remember Womens Health Expo from 10 am to 3 pm Sept. 26 at First Baptist Church of Umatilla, 550 Hatfield Drive.

The free event, which is presented by Florida Hospital Waterman, will feature local vendors providing various screenings and information on diet, exercise and overall health.

The hospitals CREATION (Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal Relationships, Outlook and Nutrition) will offer the Be Healthy Pro Screening, a comprehensive health risk assessment that includes blood pressure, pulse, cholesterol including LDL and HDL, blood glucose, height, weight and body mass index. Cost is $10.

Carol Clendinen, a registered nurse and licensed mental health counselor, will present Laughter is the Best Medicine at noon.

The public is welcome.

The Be Healthy Pro Health Screening begins at 9 am by appointment only.

Master Money Mentors

The University of Florida Lake County Extension needs volunteers for its Florida Master Money Mentor program, which provides free one-on-one financial coaching.

Volunteers will help families and individuals create and track family budgets and promote financial literacy through a variety of educational methods.

Previous background or education in financial services isnt required. Volunteers must contribute 50 hours per year.

Training will be held from 8:30 am to 4 pm Sept. 30 and Oct. 28, and 9 am to noon Oct. 15 at the extension office, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Topics will include basic money management, strategies for dealing with financial problems, credit and debt management, savings, mentoring techniques and more.

Potential volunteers need to complete an application and background check as well as participate in a pre-workshop interview process before being accepted into the program. The deadline is Tuesday.

There is a $40 registration fee and includes background screening, materials and refreshments.

Lending a hand

Members of the Leesburg Boat Club raised more than $6,000 during its Labor Day BBQ on the Basin.

Proceeds were donated to support Leesburg-based Angel Flight Southeast, a nonprofit volunteer pilot organization that gives free flights on private planes to medically and financially needy patients.
